The real difference: where AI lives

Clio started as a practice management platform and has added AI features over time — primarily through their Clio Duo assistant. Obiter was designed AI-first: the email automation, time recording, and billing compliance are not features added on top, they are the product.

For a UK solicitor, this distinction is most visible in two places. First, email: Obiter classifies and drafts a response to every email that arrives in your connected mailbox, automatically, without a fee earner opening it. Clio does not do this. Second, legal aid: Obiter builds your LAA claim from filed actions as the matter progresses. Clio does not support CCMS billing natively.

Clio's strength is breadth. With 300+ app integrations, an established mobile app, and years of refinement in matter management and billing workflows, it is a mature, full-featured platform. Obiter is more focused: it does fewer things, but the things it does — email automation, AI draft replies, automatic time capture, and UK compliance — it does exceptionally well.

Can you run both?

Yes. Some firms use Obiter alongside Clio: Obiter handles the email inbox and AI layer; Clio handles historical matter records and document templates. Obiter is designed to sit alongside existing systems without requiring migration.
